
JEFFREY S. KARLIK, M.D.
Jeffrey S. Karlik, M.D. is the founder and president of Karlik Ophthalmology, Inc.
Dr. Karlik is a life-long resident of the Pittsburgh Area. After graduating valedictorian of his high school class at Cornell High School, he completed Pharmacy School at Duquesne University graduating summa cum laude. Following this he completed Medical School at the University of Pittsburgh. Here he gained honors by serving as an officer in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He then completed a medical internship at the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh followed by his ophthalmology residency at the Saint Francis Medical Center of Pittsburgh, serving as Chief Resident his final year.
Dr. Karlik is a certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. His societal memberships include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society. He has hospital staff privileges at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital, West Penn Hospital, Mercy Hospital, UPMCPassavant Hospital, and Ohio Valley General Hospital. He has been active as a consultant at the Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is active teaching residents as Clinical Assistant Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Residency and medical students from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Additionally, residents from West Penn Hospital Internal Medicine Residency frequently rotate with Dr. Karlik to gain experience with the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic disorders.
Dr. Karlik treats all aspects of ophthalmic and visual pathology in his private practice. He is a high volume ophthalmic surgeon. He performs hundreds of cataract surgeries and hundreds of other ophthalmic surgeries and lasers each year. He has extensive experience treating ophthalmic injuries obtained from his working in the emergency departments of all three of Pittsburgh's level one trauma centers, as well as a consultant at West Penn Hospital's Burn Unit. He has screened hundreds of pre-mature infants for retinopathy of pre-maturity as a consultant at the West Penn Hospital neo-natal intensive care unit.
Dr. Karlik is one of the busiest and most experienced refractive surgeons in Western Pennsylvania. He has performed over 10,000 laser vision corrective surgeries. He is the primary affiliate surgeon at the LASIK Vision Institute (LVI) of Pittsburgh. He performs refractive surgery (LASIK and PRK) on greater than a thousand eyes each year on patients from Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, West Virginia, Upper State New York, and Maryland. Prior to his position at the LASIK Vision Institute of Pittsburgh, Dr. Karlik was an affiliate refractive surgeon at TLC Pittsburgh.
Dr. Karlik has presented and published at national ophthalmology meetings. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology/Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. He was chosen to be part of this national committee which is composed of nineteen physicians. This committee determines the level of ophthalmic care an ophthalmologist must provide to warrant a bonus in Medicare reimbursement for providing exceptional care to Medicare recipients.
Any free time Dr. Karlik has available away from ophthalmology is occupied by his wife Maria and their four children.
TROY M. KARLIK, D.O.
Troy M. Karlik, D.O. completed his undergraduate training at Duquesne University, obtaining a B.S. in Pharmacy. Following this Dr. Karlik completed medical school at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. After a one year medical internship at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Dr. Karlik completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Institute. His ophthalmology experience attained during residency was obtained from working at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Infirmary, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Veteran's Hospital in Oakland and rotations at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Karlik is a certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He treats all aspects of Ophthalmologic pathology. He has broad surgical experience, but focuses primarily on cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Karlik has extensive experience in treating ophthalmic injuries by working in the emergency departments at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital and the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. During residency, Dr. Karlik made multiple clinical case presentations at the Eye and Ear Institute's grand rounds.
Dr. Karlik has hospital staff privileges at UPMC-Passavant, Allegheny General Hospital, and Ohio Valley General Hospital. Dr. Karlik has been active with medical missions to regions in need of heath care. He accompanied Dr. Steve Rogers of Karlik Ophthalmology to the Island of Montserrat in the Caribbean Sea. There, at the St. Peters Health Center, Dr. Karlik provided volunteer surgical services to the citizens of this volcanic ravaged island.
Dr. Karlik's societal memberships include the Pittsburgh Ophthalmologic society, Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Osteopathic Association.
Prior to medical school training, Dr. Karlik played Division I golf for Duquesne University and is currently a scratch golfer. He achieved Atlantic-10 Conference All-Academic Team Honors while competing in golf at Duquesne University.
STEVEN B. ROGERS, M.D.
Steven B. Rogers, M.D. graduated summa cum laude from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Microbiology. Following this, Dr. Rogers completed medical school at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. His post-graduate training as a medical intern and ophthalmology resident were completed in Pittsburgh at the Saint Francis Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of numerous state and national professional societies and has published and presented at ophthalmic meetings.
Prior to joining Karlik Ophthalmology, Dr. Rogers was the primary teaching attending at the Saint Francis Ophthalmology Residency. He maintained this position until the Saint Francis Ophthalmology Residency was absorbed into the University of Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Residency. While working at Saint Francis, Dr. Rogers was responsible for the clinical and surgical training of over thirty ophthalmologists. These ophthalmologists that Dr. Rogers trained work in academic centers and in private practice throughout the country. In fact, Dr. Jeffrey Karlik is proud to have been trained by Dr. Rogers and thrilled that Dr. Rogers has associated with Karlik Ophthalmology.
In addition to training ophthalmologists, Dr. Rogers has been active with missions providing surgical eye care to communities and countries in need. He has traveled numerous times to the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean Sea. This island has been decimated by volcanic eruptions, which has left the remaining island inhabitants without adequate medical care. He traveled to Montserrat on a mission providing surgical and medical eye care with Dr. Troy Karlik in March of 2005. On another medical mission, Dr. Rogers traveled to Samara, Russia in 2000. During this academic exchange of expertise between some of the leading ophthalmologists of the former Soviet Union and the Saint Francis Medical Center, he performed surgery in the hospital of the late Dr. Svyataslov Fyodorov, considered the father of refractive surgery for his development of radial keratotomy (RK).

STANTON B. ELIAS, M.D.
In December of 2006, Dr. Stanton B. Elias retired after over 45 years of practice. He began working with Dr. Jeffrey Karlik in 1999. His affiliation with Dr. Karlik allowed Dr. Elias to retire from operating, but still continue his care for patients in the office. His devoted patient base was the origin of Karlik Ophthalmology.
Dr. Elias is a native of the Pittsburgh area having been born in Mckeesport. He completed his undergraduate degree with a B.S. in chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1953. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. Following a one year internship at Montefiore Hospital, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at Montefiore Hospital in 1961. Stanton began to practice ophthalmology with service in the United States Navy. In June of 1961, he was appointed Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Kittery, Maine, having the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Here he was awarded the National Defense Medal.
Dr. Elias returned to Pittsburgh and joined the staff of Passavant Hospital when it was still located in the Hill District of Pittsburgh in 1963. His practice followed the move of Passavant Hospital to the North Hills of Pittsburgh. In March of 1964 he performed the first cataract surgery at Passavant Hospital's new location in McCandless.
Dr. Elias' practice grew and thrived over the next four decades. In addition to working at Passavant, he also operated at Suburban General Hospital, Montefiore Hospital (now Montefiore-University), and Eye and Ear Hospital. He obtained the title of clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Elias is an honorary medical staff member at UPMC Passavant Hospital, Suburban General Hospital, and Eye and Ear Hospital. Dr. Elias is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In retirement he still plans to keep active with his volunteer work at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Elias is very happy that his life long goal of caring for patients in a capable, knowledgeable, patient-oriented and patient-focused fashion has been realized. He is very satisfied that his efforts have been continued by Karlik Ophthalmology.
BRETT J. KARLIK, M.D.
Brett J. Karlik, M.D. was granted early acceptance into medical school after only three years of undergraduate training at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Dr. Karlik completed medical school at the Drexel University College of Medicine, located in Philadelphia.
Dr. Brett Karlik's two older brothers, Dr. Jeffrey Karlik and Dr. Troy Karlik, inspired Brett's interest in the field of ophthalmology. After completing a medical internship at the University of Pittsburgh, Brett was accepted into the ophthalmology residency at Nassau University Medical Center, located in Long Island, New York.
During his training in New York, Dr. Karlik became proficient in the newest techniques of laser refractive surgery (LASIK) and micro-incision cataract surgery. He also developed proficiency with a variety of oculo-plastic procedures. These include lid repair, blepharoplasty, and Botox injection. He is competent and qualified to treat both retina and glaucoma disease by surgical and medical means. He is Karlik Ophthalmology's newest ophthalmic surgeon and medical doctor.
Dr. Karlik is medically licensed in the state of Pennsylvania and has operating privileges at UPMC-Passavant Hospital, Ohio Valley General Hospital, and Allegheny General Hospital. Currently he is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and New York State Ophthalmologic Society.
Brett and his family currently reside in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a devoted father and husband.
